Indiana Walmart shooting leaves at least 1 victim injured, police name suspect who died

Police in Evansville, Indiana, said Friday that a 25-year-old man opened fire at a Walmart store where he once worked on Thursday evening, injuring at least one person before he was killed during a shootout with police. 

The Evansville Police Department's Anna Gray identified the gunman as Ronald Roy Mosley II. 

Officer Taylor Merriss said that a female employee was struck in the shooting. 

Police didn’t immediately release the victim’s name or age or the extent of her injuries, but the Evansville Courier & Press reported that Merriss said she "was able to talk when she was taken away from the scene."

The department and Vanderburgh County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of an active shooter in the store at around 10 p.m. local time on Thursday.

"Threat has been neutralized and is in custody," police tweeted at 10:14 p.m.

"There were multiple officers looking for the offender. And he could come around the corner at any time," Merriss explained, describing the body camera footage as "eerie."

"When officers went in, they were trying to locate the suspect and he was all over the store. He would shoot at officers and move. So it wasn’t contained to just one area inside," Gray noted, adding that police did not immediately know how many people were shot at and that there could be additional victims who had fled the scene.

"We have been trained that if there’s an active threat, we go in – we don’t pause, we don’t take time to try to figure out what’s going on. We go in and we go where the shots are being fired," she said previously.

Other victims reportedly fled the store as police were arriving at the scene. Police encouraged any victims who may have been injured to go to the hospital. 

Gray has asked also for witnesses to come forward with information that would assist in their investigation.

"A lot of people were fleeing," she said Thursday. "We do ask that any witnesses call in if they have information."

"The entire Walmart family is shocked by the senseless violence that occurred at our Evansville store, and our hearts are with our associate at this time," Walmart told Fox News Digital in a statement. "As we learn more, we’ll do everything we can to support our associates as they cope with this tragedy."

"We’re thankful for the local first responders and will continue working with law enforcement through the course of their investigation," it said.

Evansville Police tweeted that a news conference was being planned for later Friday.

"Sending our gratitude to the Evansville Police Department for acting swiftly with bravery and professionalism to neutralize this threat and keep their community safe," Sen. Mike Braun tweeted.

The store is located at 335 S. Red Bank Road.
